Family Services Center

ATA's Family Center is designed to provide therapeutic evaluation and treatment to families in situations in which:

The children have been removed from the home due to abuse or neglect.

There are allegations of incest and siblings are separated

Children and parents are experiencing contested or protracted custody situations

Allegations of neglect and parenting capabilities are present

Allegations of parental alienation syndrome are raised.

Issues of parenting capacity relating to substance/alcohol abuse are present.

Family/Custody Evaluations

The primary consideration in a child custody evaluation is to assess the individual and family factors that affect the best psychological interests of the child. More specific questions may be raised by the court. The focus of the evaluation is on parenting capacity, the psychological and developmental needs of the child and the resulting fit.

In considering psychological factors affecting the best interests of the child, a competent evaluation focuses on the parenting capacity of the prospective custodians in conjunction with the psychological and developmental needs of each involved child. This involves (a) an assessment of the adults' capacities for parenting, including whatever knowledge, attributes, skills, and abilities, or lack thereof, are present; (b) an assessment of the psychological functioning and developmental needs of each child and of the wishes of each child where appropriate; and (c) an assessment of the functional ability of each parent to meet these needs, including an evaluation of the interaction between each adult and child.

Therapeutic Supervised Visits - What are they?

In those situations where allegations of abuse or neglect and the safety and security of a child or children in the care or presence of a parent or parents is brought into question, Therapeutic Supervised Visits may be the solution.

Therapeutic Supervised Visits provide courts and families with an efficacious process for assessing and treating families where there safety or security concerns are present. The parent or parents are provided with a quiet relaxed atmosphere to have a visit with their child or children. During the visit, a specially trained Master’s level clinician is present to discretely supervise the actual visitation. At the conclusion of the visit, the clinician meets with the parent(s) to discuss and process both positive and negative aspects of the visits. The clinician maintains written records of behavioral observations during the visit to make available to the referring authority upon request. Additionally, all visits can be videotaped.
